The Master Carolyn Roberts met the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Director General Clare Matterson CBE to celebrate the achievement of Freeman Chris Baines who has recently been awarded the prestigious RHS Victoria Medal of Honor. The Medal is restricted to 63 recipients at any one time ~ corresponding to the number of years of Queen Victoria’s reign.
Among the many success stories throughout Chris’ 50 year career as a leading independent environmental campaigner, was his TV series ‘Your Country Needs You’, the model for BBC Countryfile. Chris created the very first wildlife garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in 1985, and he published his book ‘How to Make a Wildlife Garden’. Chris sums up his lifelong achievements and passion as ‘Gardening with Nature’.
The opening speech was given by Keith Weed CBE, President of the RHS, who spoke about the importance of water, enviromental stability, and education. All key themes for the Water Conservators!
