The Water Conservation Trust, the charitable arm of the Water Conservators is currently supporting students at 15 universities.
One of the Universities we help is Birkbeck, University of London. It was founded on 11 November 1823 at the Crown and Anchor Tavern on the Strand, where Dr George Birkbeck spoke on the importance of providing working people in London with opportunities for education. Seven years later, it became one of the first colleges to admit women as students.
Members of the company attended an inspiring evening celebrating the people, partnerships and ideas that make Birkbeck such a distinctive community. We were pleased to hear how our support helps students of all ages from different backgrounds and with different experiences, to flourish.
We also heard from two of Birkbeck’s leading academics, offering fascinating insights into research that is helping to shape our understanding of the world today:
It’s Not Just Rocket Science. How Gravity Shapes Human Brain and Behaviour
Elisa Raffaella Ferrè – Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and Head of the School of Psychological Sciences
The Man Who Invented the Weekend. What Henry Ford Can Teach Us About the Four-Day Week
Pedro Gomes – Professor of Economics and Author of ‘Friday is the New Saturday’
It is thanks to the generosity of members of the Company that we can make a difference. It would be great if we could do more to help students who struggle with the costs of their studies.
