Water Conservation Trust – Supporting Students

We in the Water Conservation Trust, are currently working with fifteen universities to provide bursaries for students on post graduate courses.  We are pleased to work for the future of the profession and help those who will make a difference.

It is great to meet and talk to the young people and we recently had an invitation to Wadham College at the University of Oxford to meet our current bursary student and our immediate past bursary student.

Anna Kenyon has just completed her dissertation and is now living in London in the midst of job applications and interviews.  This is in stark contrast to the Lake District where she grew up. We were pleased to also meet Anna at our recent Court Lunch and encouraged to hear how her career is progressing.

Akhila Potluru has just started her MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management at Oxford and has shared this brief biography with us.

Akhila Potluru (MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management) was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, and graduated from the London School of Economics with a First Class honours degree in BSc International Social and Public Policy and Economics where she was also a Laidlaw Scholar. Having served as President of the UK Youth Parliament for Water, she is dedicated to raising awareness of UK water issues, particularly those related to wastewater and sewage management. To achieve this, Akhila has collaborated with numerous organisations including Water UK, Global Citizen and Xylem to produce videos addressing water challenges, with some of this work shown at COP26. Akhila has been awarded the Diana Award for her work in water advocacy and lobbying and has been recognised on Scotland’s 30 under 30 Women list. Akhila is particularly excited about the Water and Society theme of the course, and she is specifically interested in the intersections between water management and business. She hopes to explore and critically evaluate the topic of corporate water stewardship for her dissertation. Outside of academics, Akhila enjoys being outdoors and hiking. She looks forward to running her first half marathon in Oxford in October.

The Trustees, Geoff Paker, Past Master Peter Hall, Deputy Master Martin Bigg, were pleased to meet staff from the School of Geography and the Environment, Kevin Gresch and David Johnstone, as well as Barnaby Norman from Wadham College.  It was very interesting to hear the history of Wadham College especially its role in the formation of the Royal Society.  We also heard about the current work of the University in helping postgraduate students with the generous support of past benefactors and alumini.

Thank you to Wadham College for hosting us in you prestigious Old Library.
