Congratulations to Imperial winner

Congratulations to Hanzhi Chen for winning a Water Conservators’ Company Dissertation Prize for his dissertation entitled ‘The Impacts of Flame Retardants on Soil Quality, Human Health and the Environment from Agricultural Use of Sewage Sludge’, submitted for the degree of Master of Science in Environmental Engineering at Imperial, London. Deputy Master and Trustee Professor Martin Bigg was pleased to present Hanzhi with his certificate and prize during the Graduation ceremonies. Hanzhi was unable to attend the 2025 Myddelton Court Lunch so it was good to be able to meet him while he was in London, having travelled from Beijing.

Hanzhi received dual Bachelors’ degrees in Environmental Science from Minzu University of China and University College Cork, Ireland, in 2023. In 2024, he earned his Master’s degree with distinction in Environmental Engineering from Imperial, London. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. in Professor Xiangke Wang’s group at North China Electric Power University.

His current research lies at the intersection of environmental chemistry and water resource management. He is focused on developing advanced porous materials—including covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and organic cages—for water-related applications. These include the extraction of uranium from seawater, the separation of actinides in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing, and the removal of radionuclides and iodine species from nuclear wastewater.

Through material innovation and mechanistic studies, he hopes to contribute to the sustainable use of marine resources and the safe treatment of nuclear contaminants in aquatic systems.

The Trust and Company wish him well with his studies and career.
