We were honoured to witness and participate in the dedication of the Unit Plaque for No 1 Aeronautical Information Documents Unit (AIDU), a stone engraved squadron crest, which is set into the marble stonework of the floor of St Clements Danes Church.
The Church is a living memorial to all those Royal Air Force men and women who have died whilst serving, and contains over a thousand unique slate squadron and unit badges embedded in the floor. The AIDU crest is the most recent addition.
The walls have Colours and Squadron Standards from disbanded units, which have been “laid up” in the Church.
The Company supports three branches of the Services including Strategic Command, Defence Intelligence No1 AIDU based at RAF Northolt. Its mission is to provide timely, relevant and accurate aeronautical information in support of defence objectives. Since its formation in the 1950s it has provided information about many parts of the world, more recently Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Two coachloads of military and civilian staff attended the church dedication and it was very interesting talking to them and about their work.
