On 16th July 2025, The Worshipful Company of Water Conservators had the honour of meeting The Rt Hon. the Lord Mayor Alastair King and Lady Mayoress Florence King at Mansion House.
Master Water Conservator, Professor Carolyn Roberts, joined by Thames Warden Tom Flood CBE, Walbrook Warden Allan Barton, and Our Clerk, Chris Millett, gathered to commemorate a remarkable moment in history: in July 1197, King Richard I, in order to improve his liquidity, transferred the Conservancy of the River Thames to the Corporation of London for 1,500 marks.
To celebrate the occasion, we presented The Lord Mayor with a crystal water jug and we all raised a glass of water – not from the river as was once customary, but a refreshing draught of modern Thames tap water. A fitting tribute to over 800 years of stewardship, innovation, and the enduring importance of water to our city and its future.
Chris Millett, Clerk
