Great River Race

The Great River Race is London’s River Marathon. It’s a spectacular boat race covering 21.6 miles of the Thames from Millwall in the East to Richmond in the West, travelling under London’s famous bridges. It has around 300 crews taking part and is an international event with competitors from America, Australia, and many European countries.

The race is for ‘fixed seat’ only craft and a large variety of boats take part including the traditional Thames Watermen’s Cutters.  The race is based on the Watermen principle and so each crew must carry a passenger and cox along with a 3’ x 2’ flag. A handicapping system is used to ensure fair play.

The Water Conservators Cutter, Water Forget-me-not has been competing for several years.

The Master, cox and crew set off from Greenwich at the back of the flotilla where the fastest boats start. Travelling at up to 8 knots and 29 strokes per minute they were soon overtaking many other competitors. By the time they reached Richmond they had caught up with and passed other cutters.  It was a very impressive performance by the team.

The unconfirmed results for the Livery cutters are:

Scientific Instrument Makers  2:16.25

Water Conservators (mixed crew) 2:24.27

Founders 2:32.54

Glaziers 2:36.26

Barbers 2:37.55

Information Technologists (mixed crew) 2:54.42

Congratulations everyone.
