Bursary and Dissertation Prize Winners

Past Master and Trustee, Professor Martin Bigg, was invited on behalf of the Water Conservation Trust, to Clare College, Cambridge, for the MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development, Annual End of Course and Alumni Dinner.  It is 23 years since the first cohort of students came to Cambridge to begin the course, and this summer nearly 700 alumni will have successfully completed the programme.

The Water Conservation Trust has been giving a prize to a student for the best dissertation in the year, and providing student with a bursary to help with fees, since 2013.

It was with pleasure that he was able to present Katie Pascavis with her 2023-2024 Prize and Certificate for her Dissertation, Reconciling household water insecurity metrics: Insights from Nepal.  He also had the pleasure of meeting Beatrice Pepera our 2024-25 Bursary Award winner (Pictured).

Before dinner, he had the opportunity to catch up with current and past students and staff at a reception in the beautiful Fellows’ Sunken Garden next to the River Cam.  Many conversations picked up on the recently published report from the Independent Water Commission, chaired by Sir Jon Cunliffe.  He was very encouraged by the number of students and past students who wanted to, or were actively involved in, making a difference to water sustainability, nationally and internationally.

He heard about research on sustainable transport and changing agricultural practices.  The course benefits from the global recruitment of students bringing with them different perspectives on water management.  A strong message was the importance of valuing water as a limited resource.

It was a very encouraging evening and provided hope for future water and environmental management in the UK and globally.
