Words and Music for the Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Fund

The Old Bailey Choir put on two concerts a year in aid of the Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Fund.  This was an evening of music and poetry read by Larry Lamb in the Old Bailey “By the waters’ edge”.  With a water theme, we had to attend!

There was a full house of Livery, Corporation and City representatives in the impressive setting of the Old Bailey.  It is bigger and better on the inside!  The music included works by Campion, Vaughan Williams, Copeland and Storey with familiar spirituals Shenandoah and Down by the Riverside.  It took me back to singing together at school. Larry gave powerful readings of poems by Cecily Fox Smith as well as Ode to the Coast by john Cooper Clarke and In memory of a Sailor by Richard John Scarr.  His party piece was a masterly recital of the Lion and Albert, followed by the Return of Albert.

The Sheriffs’ & Recorder’s Fund is a London-based charity supporting the rehabilitation of prison leavers and their families through individual grants and prison-based rehabilitation projects.

It was a magical evening for an important cause.  Watch out for their future performances.
