Supporting young people

The Water Conservation Trust helps young people succeed and thrive, regardless of their background.  We are committed to widening participation and equality of opportunity.  We are encouraged when we hear the efforts of colleges and universities to help students alleviate the financial pressures they face.

At a recent presentation by students and staff at Newcastle University we heard that this academic year 32% of their new intake of home students were from socio-economically challenged backgrounds, their highest percentage yet.  Attracting a high proportion of students from the immediate region, the University and Union have introduced a wide range of support initiatives including an affordable meals scheme, tackling period poverty, CV writing and access to global opportunities.

It was very encouraging listening to the students and what their motivates them.  They were committed to water and the environment, liked being in a city university which was such a large part of the community, and major attractions included Newcastle United and the beach!
