Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Efforts by organisations to promote diversity and inclusion are falling into disrepute with some senior leaders because they are not delivering value to staff, customers, and shareholders.  Leaders generally want to tackle discrimination and open-up opportunity in their companies, but the work has itself proved politically charged and potentially divisive.

The Livery Knowledge, Information and Human Potential Group organised a very informative and interesting cross Livery meeting in the Information Technologist’s Hall.  The principle speakers were Simon Fanshawe OBE, Rector of Edinburgh University, partner in Diversity by Design and Nelarine Cornelius, Associate Dean, People Culture, and Inclusion, Queen Mary University. Martin Bigg, Deputy Master, represented the Water Conservators.

They recognised that many want equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to be taken off the political football pitch. It has become caught between ‘anti-woke’ speakers who want to tear it down and others who want to impose rules that can seem dogmatic, and (to some) frankly daft. The result of that is that diversity is losing credibility in the eyes of too many people.

It was very encouraging to hear that many organisations continue their commitment to EDI and gain the benefits of so doing.

Many thanks to the Educators, Communicators, Information Technologists, Management Consultants and Human Resource Professionals for organising a very successful evening.
