After the successful first London 2030 Skyline Symposium last year the Construction Liveries Group held a second symposium on how modern buildings complement old buildings. The Water Conservators are active members of the Group as construction and demolition have significant impacts on water and the environment.
The packed event in the Guildhall kicked off with an introduction to Heritage Planning by Tom Nancollas -Assistant Director, Design & Heritage, City of London. The new London Museum developing in the Smithfield poultry, fish and general market halls was described by Paul Williams – Stanton Williams. We were then introduced to London’s newer building/modern offices including the grade 1 listed Lloyds Building, the Cheesegrater aka the Leadenhall Building and the HSBC offices at Canary Wharf. John McElgunn – Senior Director, Rogers Stirk Harbour Partnership, described how they were built to be sustainable and in the case of the HSBC building, to be redesigned for residential use. Finally Richard Hill – Project Director, Sir Robert McAlpine, explained the use of some very impressive digital technologies used in construction including when scoping out the work required for the London Museum
It was a fascinating afternoon during which we learnt much about renovating old buildings and the design of the new for long term sustainability.
